What are the three parts of a micromobility platform?
1. The operator console
The operator console is the web app your team runs the fleet from. It usually includes:
- a live map of every vehicle, with its battery, status and remote controls
- zones that set where vehicles may be ridden and parked, and where they slow down
- pricing, passes and promo codes
- rider accounts, support tickets and disputes
- work orders for repairs and a record of parts
- payments, refunds, payouts and accounting
- reports on rides, revenue, riders and vehicle health
- roles, so each person sees only what their job needs
2. The rider app
The rider app is what riders use, on iOS and Android. They sign up, pass any checks you require, find a nearby vehicle, scan its code to unlock it, ride, pay and end the ride by parking in an allowed spot. A good rider app also handles reservations, passes, a wallet, ride history, reporting a problem and an emergency button. A white-label app carries your brand, not the software provider’s.
3. Connected devices
The connected device, often called an IoT device, sits on each vehicle. It has mobile data, GPS and a link to the vehicle, so the platform can lock and unlock it, switch it on or off and set a speed limit. Better devices also read the vehicle’s own data over CAN bus, detect harsh riding and crashes with a motion sensor, store positions when signal drops and let you check faults remotely. Some vehicles come with a device built in; others need one fitted.
The three parts depend on each other. When a rider taps “end ride”, the platform checks the vehicle’s position from the device against your parking zones, the app shows the rider whether the spot is allowed, the device locks the vehicle, and the console records the ride and the payment.

How is it different from vehicle telematics?
Vehicle telematics tracks vehicles that your own staff drive, such as vans and trucks. It reports position, speed, engine data and driving behaviour to a fleet manager. That covers the “see” job and parts of “control” and “keep safe”.
A micromobility platform has to do that for vehicles that members of the public ride, so it adds the rider side:
- a rider app for sign-up, unlocking and ending rides
- identity and safety checks before a ride starts
- pricing per ride, passes and promos
- payments, deposits, refunds and the accounting behind them
- parking rules the rider sees before ending a ride, and fees for parking in the wrong place
- rider support and disputes
It also acts during the ride, not only in reports afterwards. A zone can slow a scooter as it enters a busy pedestrian area. Telematics tools are not built to take rides and payments from the public, so adapting one means building the whole rider side yourself.
How is it different from building your own?
Building your own means creating all three parts: a rider app for two app stores, an operator console, device integration, payments, ID checks, accounting and security. Then you keep a team of engineers to fix and update them for as long as the service runs.

- Score all seven jobs. Rate each platform on see, control, price, get paid, maintain, keep safe and report. Every gap becomes a spreadsheet or extra staff time.
- Check the rider app. Your name in both app stores, your riders’ languages, and no provider branding on receipts or emails.
- Check device support. List your vehicle makes and ask for a written yes or no for each. Ask whether other makers’ devices can be added, so you are not tied to one.
- Follow the money. Rider payments should land in your own account, with no share of ride revenue you have not priced in.
