Why it matters. Riders build a habit with the app on their phone. If another company’s name shows on the store listing, receipts or emails, you are building someone else’s brand. The app also needs to speak your riders’ languages.

A good answer sounds like: “The app is published under your name in both stores. Our name does not appear on screens, receipts or emails. It is included on every plan and supports these languages.”

2. How does a rider get from download to first ride?

Why it matters. Every extra step at sign-up loses riders. But skipping checks that your city or insurer requires causes bigger problems later. You need a flow that is short and still does the checks you need.

A good answer sounds like: “Here is the flow on a real phone: sign up, add a payment method, scan the code on the scooter and ride. Riders can also reserve a scooter. You choose which checks sit in that flow.”

Safety

3. Which rider checks can we switch on?

Why it matters. Cities, insurers and site owners may ask how you keep underage or impaired riders off your vehicles. Find out what your permit and insurer need, then make sure the software can do it without custom work.

A good answer sounds like: “You can require an ID check with a selfie, a helmet photo before the ride and a short sobriety check. Each one is a setting, not a paid add-on.”

4. What happens when something goes wrong during a ride?

Why it matters. Falls and crashes happen. What counts is how fast you find out, whether the rider can call for help, and whether you have a record of what happened.

A good answer sounds like: “The device on the scooter detects harsh riding and crashes and scores each ride. The rider has an emergency button that shares their live location. Your team sees the event in the console, next to the ride.”

5. Where does rider money land, and does anyone take a cut?

Why it matters. If rider payments go into the platform’s account first, you wait for payouts and depend on the platform for your cash. A share of ride revenue also grows with every ride you sell.

A good answer sounds like: “Riders pay into your own payment account. We take no percentage of rides, passes or wallet top-ups. Deposits are held on the card, not charged.”

6. How flexible is pricing?

Why it matters. Some of your first prices will be wrong. You need to change them yourself, without a developer: per minute or per distance, flat fares, busy-time prices, daily caps, passes and launch promos.

A good answer sounds like: “You set time, distance or flat pricing, add surge pricing, daily caps and reservation fees, sell passes and create promo codes, all from the console.”

7. Does it do the accounting, or only list payments?

Why it matters. A list of payments is not a set of books. Refunds, deposits, wallet balances, promo costs, VAT and payouts all have to match, or your accountant rebuilds them in a spreadsheet every month.

A good answer sounds like: “Every ride, refund and payout is posted as double-entry accounting. You get a P&L, balance sheet, cash flow and VAT report, and payouts from your payment provider are reconciled.”

Operations and repairs

8. How do zones and parking rules work on the street?

Why it matters. Badly parked scooters are the most visible part of your service. A line on a map does little. A zone that acts on the vehicle, and a warning before the rider ends the ride, prevent problems.

A good answer sounds like: “You draw zones that warn the rider, slow the scooter or cut power. Before a rider ends a ride, the app shows whether the spot is allowed and any fee. Riders can dispute a fee with photos.”

9. How does the team track repairs, parts and rider issues?

Why it matters. A scooter waiting for a part earns nothing. Without repairs and parts in the same system as the fleet, you cannot see why vehicles are off the street or which models cost most to keep running.

A good answer sounds like: “Your team opens work orders against each vehicle and records the parts used from tracked stock. Rider tickets go to a support desk in the same console.”

Data and intelligence

10. Do the reports tell us what to do, not just what happened?

Why it matters. Ride counts are the easy part. The useful questions are harder: which riders are about to stop, which vehicles are in poor shape, which price change would earn more. And an AI assistant must not make numbers up.

A good answer sounds like: “You see riders at risk of leaving, a health score for every vehicle and suggested revenue changes with their estimated impact. The assistant answers only from your own data, never invents a number, and a person confirms any action.”

Devices

11. Which connected devices does it work with, and are we locked in?

Why it matters. The device on each scooter is what makes remote locking, speed limits and live location possible. If the software works with only one device, changing software later means refitting every vehicle. Signal also drops in tunnels and underground car parks, so ask what happens there.

A good answer sounds like: “Our device locks and unlocks remotely, sets speed limits and sounds an alarm. It fits several vehicle makes, reads CAN bus and stores its position when signal drops. We can also add other makers’ devices.”

If you already own vehicles, list each make and model and ask for a written yes or no for every one.

Security and GDPR

12. Where is our data hosted, and how is GDPR handled?

Why it matters. You will hold ID photos, selfies, payment details and trip locations. If you have riders in the EU, GDPR is likely to apply, and riders can ask to see or delete their data. Check with your own lawyer what applies to you.

A good answer sounds like: “We can tell you exactly where your data is hosted. The console has GDPR tools for rider requests. Each device has its own encryption keys.”

13. Who on our team can see and do what?

Why it matters. A mechanic does not need rider ID photos. A support agent should not be able to change prices. Roles limit both mistakes and access to personal data.

14. What is the full price for our fleet in year one?

Why it matters. The per-vehicle rate is rarely the whole bill. Why it matters. A demo with sample data shows you screens. A trial with your own scooters shows how sign-up, unlocking, parking and repairs work on your streets. Some platforms charge €12,500–15,000 for a pilot, so ask early. Also ask how you get your data out if you ever leave.
